Artist Statement

“Drawing on moments from everyday life I improvise with the binaries of spontaneity and choice. The work is driven by a process where one action leads to another. At times it is made rapidly by soaking, pouring and blotting pigments. Other works are made slowly, sometimes over years. Piecing work together in stops and starts, fragments are cut up and reassembled as in the tradition of quilting. My engagement with abstraction departs from earlier narrative-based work exploring identity, but continues a dialogue with transformation. I am interested in repetition, pattern, the grid and inspired by artists such as Frank Bowling, Agnes Martin and Ed Moses. Daily life is full of repetition, yet each moment is fresh. I am driven to shape materials, transform the chaotic and create objects of contemplation.” ~DS
